LONG BEACH - Long Beach firefighters pumped water off an 85-foot yacht to keep it from sinking in the Alamitos Bay marina, a fire department spokesman said today.

The crew of Fire Rescue Boat 1 was dispatched at 8:48 a.m. Thursday to Gangway 3 in Alamitos Bay, where they found the yacht sitting several feet below the waterline, said Steve Yamamoto of the Long Beach Fire Department.

They called in Rescue Boat 3 and more help from lifeguards and additional firefighters. They used siphon jet pumps called eductors below deck, and both rescue boats pumped the yacht for more than an hour until it was brought back up to bilge level, Yamamoto said.

The yacht did not sink and no other boats were damaged. A health and hazardous materials crew was notified of residual oil left in the yacht's engine room.

The cause of the vessel sinking was being investigated, Yamamoto said.
